Axion Racing is a self sponsored autonomous racing team battling large universities, Department of Defense contractors, and large for profit organizations like the Ford Motor Company. Since 2003, the team's major sponsor has been the Kehaly family out of Westlake Village, California.

The team has wisely spent funds for off the shelf components, vehicle updates, and lots of field testing. This allowed the team to be ranked as 6th in the 2004 DARPA Grand Challenge and ranked as the 3rd team in the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge. These team rankings are from intensive DARPA qualifications held at the Fontana Speedway.

During 2005, Axion Racing's Spirit started and finished ahead of  many university teams including Caltech, UCLA, Princeton, and Cornell. She started and finished ahead of Department of Defense contractor Mitre. Spirit also started and finished ahead of the autonomous vehicle entry from the Ford Motor Company.

Sponsor monies continue to help complete requirements on a shoestring and the autonomous results are spectacular in action.
